LSKC 2008

28-Jun-08
4th Week of Camp

We ended Session 1 with a great week at LSKC! I would like to welcome everyone back or just to Session 2.

Monday we went to the State Museum. It was many people's first trip there, and it was awesome to learn about Indiana. The kids saw what Indiana was like in the past, what it is now, and even got a glimpse of what may be the future. Everyone had a great time.

Tuesday we made up for our lost swimming trip a couple of weeks ago. The plan was to go to Indy Island, but the weather was just to nice not to go to Sahm Park. Besides, if there is anything that I have learned this year, it is not to take good weather for granted. We had a good time enjoying just that. It was also "Team Day" and the kids were supporting their favorite teams, whether football, basketball, or their schools. If anyone would have supported the greatest team ever (The Miami Dolphins) they would have gotten booku brownie points, but nobody but me did.

Wednesday we took a trip to United Artist to go see "Happy Feet". It was refreshing to take a break from the heat and see a movie set in the South Pole. The movie had a great lesson on how to start treating our planet.

Thursday we found out the winners of the Penny War. Despite all the talk from Elaine, the older room pulled it off by raising -$15.58. Then was the middle room with -$23.36, and then the young room with -$23.91. All together we raised $215.85 for the camp! Great Success! I had to leave a little early because I got a call from my wife about possibly being in labor, but we had a successful "crazy sock day". In addition we had our rotations and the egg drop. We had 14 people's eggs survive the plummit.

Friday wewent swimming at Indy Island. We swam by ourselves fora while, butafter about an hour some other camps showed up. I am proud and confident to say that our camp far outshined the others in their behavior. When we got back to camp everyone was worn out from such a busy week and swimming.

So that wraps up Session 1, and let's just keep the good times coming with Session 2. Wehave said goodbye to some campers, but will be welcoming new ones Monday.

3rd Week of Camp

The good times just keep rolling in at LSKC! We had a super busy, active, & most of all fun week 3 at camp. It was full of theme days, field trips, and different events.

Monday we had our Scavenger Hunt at Circle Centre Mall. The camp was broken up into 8 totally random groups. Brittany and I had a group, so that made 8. The teams were given 10$ to spend, because some of the tasks required things to be purchased. It was a blast, and Mark continued his scavenger hunt-winning ways and along with his sister tying him won. Coming in a very close second was Abby's team. Then we all ate lunch in the food court and headed home.

Tuesday everyone was seeing double with all the twins running around. Nobody was dressed as closely as Brandon and me, but everyone gave it a good effort :). We had twins, triplets, and even some quadruplets at camp. When it came time to choose the 8 winners of the theme days, the staff decided that since it takes so much committment to plan to wear the same thing, that we would award everyone who participated bonus bucks. Everyone was delighted!

Wednesday was our first Movie @ Camp. The kids got all googly-eyed at all the snacks we had for sale. Then they got even more ecstatic when they realized how good the LSKC prices were! We had a tad of a delay with the popcorn machine, but it finally arrived and we had hot and fresh popcorn to enjoy. We watched "Alvin and the Chipmunks", and I can thank the director of the movie for making my campers sing like chipmunks for the rest of the day.

Thursday was my favorite day in the 11 years that I have worked at camp. Tacky Day was awesome. It was so hilarious to see the outfits that the kids came up with.Feast your eyes on thepicturesand you will realize the commitment for the bonus bucks. Then after our camp day we had our Parent Night. We had dinner at 6:30 and it was delicious. Right after that Brandon surprised me with a birthday/soon to be my son's birthday cake and presents. My wife and I are so thankful and blessed to have parents and friends that care about us so much. Thanks! The Talent Show was a huge success as well. Everyone did so great with their acts.

Friday we got to finally go swimming at Sahm Park. The weather was beautiful, but the water could have been a tad warmer. It was another great swimming trip. When we got back to camp I gave the campers some great news that we would be going swimming next Tuesday, the 24th. Next week we are not only going swimming twice, but are going on 4 field trips! It's going to be a busy week!

Let's finish Session 1 with a great week 4! The State Museum on Monday, swimming at Indy Island on Tuesday, United Artist for "Happy Feet" on Wednesday, Egg Drop on Thursday, and Swimming hopefully at Sahm on Friday!

2nd Week of Camp

We had a great second week of camp at LSKC! Everyone is really starting to get into the swing of things. Again, the weather tried to put a damper on things, but we did not allow it.

Monday was our first "real" field trip and we went bowling at Woodland Bowl. We split the camp into 8 equal, age apprpriate groups. Brittany and I both had a team. The kids bowled and everyone had a great time. After knocking down the pins we ate our lunches there and returned to camp.

Tuesday we stayed at camp and had Stripe Day. The creativity just keeps on rolling and it was another successful day. We played "Honey if you love me", and it was a big hit. It is always funny to see the kids try to make the other kids smile/laugh. Some of them really turn it on and are stone cold, and do not smile!

Wednesday we went to United Artist and saw Evan Almighty. I could not have been happier with all the camper's behavior at the movies. The movie was really good to. When we got back to camp we ate lunch and them played "Elves, Giants, & Wizards", which is like an interactive team game of rock, paper, scissors. It was great fun!

Thursday was School Spirt Day, and all the kids were decked out in spirit. The campers were representing the schools that they went to, schools that they are going to go to, colleges, and programs that they have been in. We even heard a few fight songs. It's nice to see that the kids don't totally forget about school during the summer. The kids also came up with and voted on a new theme day for June 26th. There were many great ideas, but everyone decided on "Crazy Sock Day". Brandon came up with "Bald and Winter Day", which is where everyone shaves their head and wears their winter clothes to camp, but the kids for some reason didn't like that idea.

Friday the weather caught up to us. It just could not allow us to have a week where it doesn't affect us. We went to Indy Island to swim, and right before we got in the pool we were sent off the pool deck because of the lightning. The policy there is after the last strike, you have to wait 30 minutes. We tried to wait the storm out but after about 45 minutes we decided to cut out losses and go back to camp. Everyone was upset, but I told them that sometimes life hands you lemons.

Let's keep the good times rolling with week 3! Remember, Thursday is Parent Night. Dinner is at 6:30, and plan on coming out! It is always a great time.

1st Week of Camp

Wow, what a way to start out LSKC 2008! We had a great first week of Session 1. The weather wasn't always cooperating, but we made the most of what we had.

Monday we spent most of the day just getting to know eachother. We played a game where we had a sheet of traits, and everyone had to find someone that had that thing and sign the other person's paper. It was great fun, and any advantage that the returning campers had was thwarted by the new campers' fire to get right in there and win. We played a few more games and by the end of the day, most everyone had a name to every face.

Tuesday was our first Theme Day. It was Hat Day, and I couldn't have been happier with the turnout. There were top hats, derby hats, baseball hats, viking hats, and all kinds of animal hats as well. It was a thrill to see all different styles and creativity. Tuesday we also had our rotations for the first time. The kids learned how to play Speedball, and started a Independence Quilt.

Wednesday we had a scheduled trip to Holliday Park, but had to stay at camp because of all the storms. We still had a good time, and watched "Hoodwinked". We listened to a story, and then had a trivia game about it afterwards. The kids were surprisedby that!

Thursday was Group Color Day. Each of the groups came up with their color earlier in the week. People were decked out in all of them. It was so great to see. Rachel's group took home the spirit award for the group that was the proudest. All the members were head to toe in black. There were other individual winners that we could not deny their spirit as well. We also had our annual Scavenger Hunt. We mixed up all the groups, and Mark's team ended up finishing first. All the teams did a great job!

Friday the weather finally helped us out and we were able to go swimming at Sahm Park. I could not have been more proud of the way the camp not only handled the first swimming trip, but the first field trip at all. The kids got to see their hard work and behavior paid out in the form of Bonus Bucks as well.

So here's to another great week of LSKC, this is only the begining! Woodland Bowl on Monday, so remeber to wear your camp shirts.
